How to become an RBT - Step by step

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements

Step 2: Complete the 40-Hour RBT Training

  • Be at least 18 years olr older 
  • Have a high school diploma (or equivalent)
  • Pass a criminal background check (within 180 days of applying)

Step 2: Complete the 40-Hour RBT Training

This training covers the foundations of ABA, including:


  • Data collection
  • Teaching new skills
  • Behavior reduction
  • Professional ethics


The training must be finished within 180 days of submitting your application.

Step 3: Show Your Skills in the Competency Assessment

After training, you’ll complete an Initial Competency Assessment with a BCBA or BCaBA.
You’ll demonstrate the skills outlined in the RBT Task List.

The assessment must be completed within 90 days of your application.

Step 4: Apply to the BACB

  • Create your account at bacb.com  
  • Upload your documents: education, training certificate, background check, and competency assessment  
  • A BCBA or BCaBA will sign your Attestation form to confirm eligibility

Step 5: Take the RBT Exam

Step 6: Start Working as an RBT

Once your application is approved, schedule your exam with Pearson VUE

The exam tests your knowledge of ABA basics and the RBT Task List

Once you pass the exam, you’ll work under supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA  


You must follow the RBT Ethics Code and receive ongoing supervision

  • Continue receiving supervision   
  • Complete updated background checks if required
