Instructions for Completing Your RBT Background Check

Before moving forward with your RBT Initial Competency Assessment, you must complete a background check that meets the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) requirements.

Follow these steps carefully:
Step 1: Choose a Background Check Provider

🔹 The BACB requires that the background check:

🔹 Is conducted within 180 days of your RBT application.

🔹 Covers all places you have lived, worked, or studied in the past 5 years.

🔹 Checks state and federal criminal records.

🔹 Is conducted by a third-party professional provider (not self-reported).


Examples of acceptable providers:

🔹 Checkr (www.checkr.com)

🔹 First Advantage

🔹 Sterling

🔹 Local or state law enforcement agencies that provide full reports


Step 2: Complete Your Background Check

🔹 Go to the provider’s website and request a criminal background check.

🔹 Make sure you use your full legal name and provide accurate information.

🔹 Pay the provider directly (costs vary depending on provider).


Step 3: Get a Copy of Your Report

🔹 When your background check is complete, request a full copy of the results.

🔹 You will need the official report — not just a summary or screenshot.


Step 4: Send Your Report (Your Assessor)

🔹 Email or upload a secure copy of the full background check report.

Step 5: Keep a Copy for Yourself

🔹 Save your report for your records.

🔹 You may need it for your RBT application with the BACB.
